Disposal

This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

 1. The concentration of the base should be 1 M or less. Dilute it to this concentration if it is more concentrated. Use a large beaker and place it in a fume hood.
  a. When dissolving a base, heat may be evolved. Ice can be used to help control the heat.
  b. Work with a small amount of base at first, and then scale up.
 2. Slowly add dilute hydrochloric acid to the base until the mixture is neutralized to about a pH of 7.
 3. Pour the final solution down the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.

Solution Prep

Add 125 g of potassium hydroxide to 400 ml of DI water. Next, add 173 g of potassium sodium tartrate tetrahydrate. Dilute to a final volume of 500 ml of DI water.
