Acquaint Students with Environmental Problems Created By Mining

  • Demonstrate remediation techniques for mining waste
  • Linked to a real world scenario
  • Includes a teacher's guide
During the past century, the mining industry has left behind tailing piles, which can contaminate the environment. With this kit, students perform two labs addressing the current procedures involved with removing metal wastes and restoring the affected area to its original conditions. Modeling a method used to profitably extract leftover copper from mine tailings, students learn how to conduct this procedure while limiting the environmental damage. Students then perform an experiment to determine what percentage of biosolids mixed with tailings would provide the best substrate for the growth of ryegrass, to reclaim copper tailing piles without the use of topsoil and provide habitat for wildlife. Includes a teacher’s guide, student copymasters, and materials for five setups.
