Disposal

This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

 1. Add several pieces of sodium or lithium (no more than 25 g) to a 500-mL beaker. The metal should be covered in mineral oil to prevent a reaction with the air. The beaker should be placed in a fume hood.
 2. Slowly add ethyl alcohol to the metal. Anhydrous ethyl alcohol is recommended as opposed to 95% ethyl alcohol. Add at a rate that allows for a slow evolution of hydrogen gas. Stir the reaction mixture until all of the metal has dissolved.
 3. Once all the metal has reacted, water can be added in a volume equal to the amount of ethyl alcohol present.
 4. Neutralize the solution with dilute hydrochloric acid to a pH of about 7.
 5. Pour the final solution down the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.
